The 4 Cs of Diamonds and What They Mean
How does a jeweler assess a diamond’s qualities? Two diamonds that
initially appear similar can have vastly different clarity. Whether
you’re buying a 3ct oval engagement ring
or a tennis bracelet, understanding how the industry considers diamonds
and how they’re graded can help you decide which diamond or piece of
jewelry is right for you.
The Color of the Diamond
Rather than grading a diamond on its color, it’s actually graded on its
lack of color. The standard is a D-to-Z color-grading system, with D
being the clearest. A D rating means it is the most structurally perfect
and chemically pure diamond. Diamonds can range from warm whites to
browns and yellows.
Cuts and Facets
Cut
has little to do with the diamond's shape. Instead, cut is graded based
on how well light interacts with the diamond’s facets. Cut assesses the
precision of artistry and workmanship, so that the proportions, polish,
and symmetry return light through the facets of your chain cross diamond tennis chain necklace.
Clarity and Blemishes
The intense heat and pressure that form diamonds also cause blemishes.
Clarity evaluates their number, nature, size, relief, and position.
Diamonds graded VS1 and SI2 (Very Slightly Included 1 and Slightly
Included 2) differ significantly in quality, despite looking similar to
the naked eye.
Carats Measure Weight
The carat measures a diamond’s weight. A metric carat is 200 milligrams,
and each carat is subdivided into 100 points. Measurements can be up to
the hundredth decimal place. Diamonds above a carat are typically
expressed in both carats and decimals, while diamonds under a carat are
often just measured in points.
The 4 Cs and Cost
Each of the 4 Cs affects a diamond’s price. D-graded diamonds are often
pricier than Z-graded due to their purer color, and well-cut diamonds
are costlier because they're harder to cut. Fewer blemishes increase
value. Larger carats mean a heavier, more expensive diamond.
